Berthing, Mooring & Anchoring

Anchoring is possible anywhere within the River out of the main channel, with holding varying from good mud to dodgy shingle, but be aware that this has become a very popular place especially for yuppies at the weekend. You could be plagued by PWCs, paddleboarders and lots of yoof making lots of noise - on the other hand you may enjoy that atmosphere so, if so, it's just the place for you. ... read more

Orford facilities update
Written by Johng1 | 5th Jan 2019
The friedly village store is under new management and no longer closes Wed and Sun afternoons nor is it now 'snooty and overpriced' (see comment 2014). Post Office including cash services 7 days a week so no need for a bank. The garage will close end Jan 2018 so fuel not available locally.

Update 2015

These notes were reviewed by Don in mid April 2015. Everything is up to date but note that the Ore estuary survey is still that of 2014.

good place to have a break
Written by n07900 | 13th Jul 2014
Just spent 2 weeks in the river ore, and river butley en route, lovely and quiete. Philip The harbour master at orford runs a brilliant water taxi and is freindly too. I would second the need to have plenty of stores on boat, as local shop a bit pricy, and a tad snooty too. I walked out and looked at the bouys to the entrance at low tide and they were placed well, phew.

Amenities in Aldeburgh
Written by Bandicoot | 9th Oct 2013
Definitely worth being stocked up for Orford, but worth knowing that Aldeburgh has two supermarkets and a range of excellent quality shops on the high street supplying great local produce, from meat and vegetables to a delicatessen and bakery, as well as a number of fish huts on the beach. There are also two fish and chip shops and a number of good restaurants, as well as a scattering of characterful pubs serving various foodstuffs and even a decent Chinese takeaway. An electrical shop sells lots of helpful things for mends and there are two boatyards, one of which is on the Quay. Lots of theatre and music through the summer months and there is a cinema. Definitely worth the walk into town and little you couldn't get hold of in working hours.

Update 2013
Written by dononshytalk | 4th Apr 2013
These notes were updated by Don T on 4th April 2013. The big change is the removal of the Eastcoastrivers website which supplied pilotage for the entrance to the River Ore. At the moment there is no replacement for that site so, as well as reasonable wind/tide conditions you will need good visibility, so that you can see the buoyage.
